An Impressive New Freebie
I'm terrible when it comes to a freebie.
Yes it's true.
No way in hell would I go and knock on doors, nor ask for anything...but if you put it out on the kerb for any to take, then by gosh I's'm gonna take it!!
This 1950s freestanding record player and radio was no exception. Although only a side-on view was visible from my ever-trawling van, that was enough for my well-trained eagle eyes; I swerved over to the wrong side of the road pronto-like, and was duly rewarded for my aberrant behaviour.
A fabulous, compact-sized prize awaited me, one I could easily lift alone. Yes the record player and radio both work! One speaker doesn't, so maybe one day I'll get around to that wee repair.
But for now, I'm happy to have music in the house!

Love Vintage Show & Sale Brisbane...On This Weekend!!
The annual Love Vintage Show & Sale is on again!
At the Brisbane Convention Centre, Southbank, Friday 5.30-10 pm, Saturday 10-5 & Sunday 10-4 pm.
This will be our biggest-ever fair, with a serious TON of fresh vintage that I've kept aside specially for this event. We have so much 50s gorgeousness, jewellery & retro treasures, you simply have to come along and see for yourselves.
And I'll be up on stage talking undies- yes really! Here's the official blurb from the Love Vintage website...
Not only are we doing a giant-sized fashion stall, we're also creating an Art Deco display from our personal collections, so big it needs three vans to transport it all. So big, in fact, that we're closing the shop for the week.
This fair will be a massive production for us & has been killer in the preparation, so I'd love to see you come and say hi in person, but if you can't never fear, I'll have a blog report done next week.x.

New To The Shop This Week-Tamborine
Yowzers! I haven't done one of these posts for ages- so of course there's a ton of new stuff!
Totally & completely mint condition blue anodised tea set with tray- never ever been used, of course!
Rare ROUND tooled leather box purse- I challenge my leather 70s-loving friends not to lust over this one!!
Hard plastic retro figural geese measuring cup set...just too cute!!!
Stylised Art Deco ashtray...but how small is the ashtray, and large the backing plate?? An odd one, to be sure, and we're still debating where it may have come from.
Never mind the daggy doily headrests (they're only there to prevent shop soiling, as are the magazines) - these are some awesome 50s boomerang chairs!!
Made in Australia by renowned furniture manufacturer La Fay, this is a fabulous set of three armchairs, all with original wool boucle upholstery AND the original amtching footstool.
With a genie bottle, barkcloth lamp and 70s phone like that, seriously who WOULDN'T want to come in & take a seat?!

Kitsch'in The Kitchen
My new kitchen is *almost* in- YAY!
It's taken a good 6 weeks longer than expected (who creates all these delays, I ask you)....and it still isn't finished yet, but at least it's functional.
I can't show off the wholecorner room yet, but here's my fave bit so far.
As you can see the new kitchen is themed red & cream, quite different to my previous green & blue Art Deco kitchen. Let's see a few more bits of kitchenalia I've acquired recently. The beauty of a whole new colour scheme is, I can buy a whole heap of new stuff.
What a 'shame' then I've had to buy a few more vintage bits & pieces to match...all red, naturally!
Hows this Czech porcelain tea canister, a steal at $2 because of its broken lid. But up high atop the cupboards, no-one will know.
Danish bakelite salt pig, a recent bargain from the WAC
50s plastic cruet set by Embee, Sue nabbed this one for me for a pittance & I daresay it'll be a fave for quite some time.
It's always amazing to snaffle a piece of Gayware, but a red biscuit barrel with handle? Super-score!! Thanks again to the WAC.
So what have I done with all the blue stuff? Ermm...only gone and bought more, of course. Bonus of my fab new house, is that it has a ridiculous amount of shelving and display space...just what a vintage enthusiast needs. So I can do red, blue, 50s, 30s...whatever I like, really.
Czech enamel match box....
And matching salt box. Red for use, blue for display, right?
Pale blue Speedie jug, another one just for display
Arabia Finel tea pot....which is essential, obviously.
And my latest kitchen beauty, a *blue* Sunbeam Mixmaster. The white one in the top pic is for everyday use, this as-yet-uncleaned blue one is for display only. These were made in the typical 50s pastels of yellow, blue, pink and green. Other than white these were the only colours ever made, and the coloured ones are now rare as hens' teeth. Considering that they usually sell for $475-plus, I was very happy to snaffle this for a mere $80. The fact that it's missing a bowl, well that just gives me something else to hunt for, doesn't it?!
*UPDATES* Other than collecting, there's a lot to tell!
Not only had I been horribly ill with food poisoning for a few days, I've had Sue in hospital for a week with a far more serious, and ongoing, complaint. To say she got choppered out in a heli-ambulance (who even knew they existed?!) to the nearest hospital with just an hour to live wouldn't be exaggerating. Unfortunately.
Sue is on the mend now....slowly....but it's been a very touch-and-go couple of weeks.
It seems like every time we get a minute to take a deep breath, another 'major' pops up. But that's the beauty of a partnership, you're never alone to shoulder a burden, and a burden is never that, simply because it's halved.
And I won't even talk about my rubbish internet here. Great house, smack bang in suburbia....& it's in an awful black spot. Grr! So you'll understand if I haven't been to visit you lately, but when it takes an hour to load a single blog page, let alone 50 per day? I'm sure you get it!

Miss Pinup Australia QLD Finals
| With Pixie Roberts, founder and operator of Miss Pinup Australia |
Wow wow wow!! If you've never been to a Miss Pinup Australia contest & you love vintage...well let me tell you YOU GOTTA GO!!
As minor sponsors of the contest we were treated to tickets, but also having had many of the entrants seek our advice & purchase their outfits and props from us, we wanted to see 'our girls' in action!
So what's it all about??
A national competition designed to 'bring out your inner pinup', it has a heavy emphasis on vintage glamour, inner beauty & just being a damn nice person to boot.
And while yes it is indeed a competition, unlike most it is open to women of all ages and sizes- and yes even to men!
There are 6 categories in which to compete. Miss Va-Va Voom, for size 14-+, Miss Neo, for those who wish to put a modern spin on the vintage pinup, Miss Perfect, for those under 30, Miss Classic for those 30-40, Miss Prestige, for those over 40, & Miss Illustrated, for the inked girls among us.
Girls compete at a state level then the winners in each category from each state go on to compete in the national finals to be held in Sydney this coming April.
You'll understand why this post is a bit pic-heavy as you scroll down, with so many amazing girls, outfits and poses to choose from, I think I'm glad I'm not a man or I might have gone crazy- the atmosphere was electric enough for me as it was!
Electing to sit with my friends rather than at the sponsors table gave me a rather poor view, so many of the pics you see here are used with permission from the official MPA QLD sponsor pinup photography specialist, Street Candy.
Admittedly the pics here are just a small few of the girls we had the privilege of seeing perform; to see more go to the official Street Candy website, trust me get yourself ready for an eyeload of vintage glam.
